Our Story

The Inspiration Behind SMG

Dr. Stephen Mbuvi was born in the rural village of Kiteta, Kenya, an arid region where families heavily rely on agriculture and face significant economic hardships. Like many local parents, Stephen’s struggled to afford his education. However, through hard work and the support of a local trader, Stephen excelled, eventually earning a USAID sponsorship to study in the U.S. and graduating with a PhD in Food Engineering from the University of Illinois.

Tragically, Stephen’s life was cut short by a sudden fall. Devastated but determined to honor his deep valuation of education, his community started a library at his childhood school, Kiteta Primary. That single seed has grown into a multitude of projects supporting students, teachers, and parents. In December 2024, Stephen Mbuvi Global (SMG) was officially established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit to sustain and expand this work.

What we do

For 24 years, generous donations have allowed us to support the Kiteta Primary School community in critical ways:

    • Rebuilding Classrooms: Replacing roofs and renovating severely aged buildings (Block B completed; Block C ongoing).

    • Powering Education: Funded the connection and installation of electricity to the school to power computers and administrative offices.

    • Clean Water: Partnered to build a rainwater harvesting tank so students no longer have to draw water from dry riverbeds before dawn.

    • Curriculum Resources: Providing new, required curriculum books so students no longer have to share one book among five peers.

    • Stephen Mbuvi Scholarship Fund (SMSF): Launched in 2026 to provide school fees for high-performing students to attend quality secondary schools.

    • Vocational Training: Built a vocational school (opening late 2026) to teach welding, carpentry, and tailoring to youth pursuing non-traditional academic paths.

    • Menstrual Health: Providing every adolescent girl (and local women) with locally made, reusable menstrual pads, keeping girls in school and stimulating the local economy.

    • School Uniforms: Sponsoring high-quality uniforms and PE clothes for students in need.
